Exhibition of graduates of the 2018/19 School of Modern Art "Free Workshops" at MMOMA.
Thematic block - Country.
The work is a reaction to Russia's conflict with Ukraine:
"My grandmother on my father's side is Ukrainian. She rarely spoke Russian. The two lines have always been one in my family: tricolor mixed with bicolor, mova flowed into Russian speech. I didn't speak mova, but it was always part of my cultural code.
November 2014 split my life in two, creating a terrifying dichotomy inside and out. My rustic, warm, cozy self was burning in the House of Officers in Odesa and being shot by mercenaries in Donbas. And now there is no Russian left in me, it is destroyed with all the shame, grief, death, and war. There are people, destinies, and cripples.
I am the bleeding wound of national identity.
I am the torn vein of broken destinies and shattered lives."
The work addresses not only the theme of national identity, but also of disconnection. Conflict instigated by governments becomes the cause of people's breaking ties. New losses open old wounds, recalling the grief and parting of past lives. The global and the personal are equalized in importance.
